Street Smart

Street Smart is a multi-session, skills-building program to help runaway and homeless youth practice safer sexual behaviors and reduce substance use.  Sessions address improving youths’ social skills, assertiveness and coping through exercises on problem solving, identifying triggers and reducing harmful behaviors. Agency staff also provides individual counseling and a trip to a local community health provider.  The program particularly targets youth ages 11-18 and groups can be coed or same-sexed.

The group consists of eight two-hour group sessions; one individual counseling session; and a group field trip to a local community health resource.  While it is preferable that teens attend every session, the program is designed so that each session stands on its own.

Our group facilitator, Kaye, keeps the groups interactive, interesting, and informative by using various elements and techniques like role-plays, videotaping group exercises, HIV trivia, open discussions and demonstrations.

If you are interested in participating in a group or having the Street Smart program come to your facility or youth group, please contact Leigh Evans at 860-951-4833 or e-mail her at leev@aidsprojecthartford.org
